  Prologue

  Friday, June 5, 2020

Once again, Missy was with her pack, celebrating the full moon. She had waited for a couple more days in Hong Kong before teleporting back home to Mike. She’d wanted to learn what Lisa and Marie would find out before doing that. As it turned out, based on the flurry of communications after her visit, the Zhu-Gung coven was no longer considering any future operations in the U.S. They wanted never to see her again.

She did spend those days seeing the sights. Not only with Les and Marsha, but with the men in her pack and many of the Alphas. She was deeply indebted to them all and assured them she would never forget the way they had supported her. They, in turn, were enthusiastic in their praise for her performance before Zhu-Gung. Most admitted they never dreamed anyone could wield as much power as she had demonstrated. They also praised her restraint; she hadn’t killed anyone.

Mike had welcomed her back and insisted she do nothing but spend time with him for forty-eight hours. Yes, she’d kept her promise to return, for which he was grateful, and then she devoted herself to making him happy just as he’d asked. He told her that her absence while confronting evil witches in Hong Kong had worried him more than any other time, even when she’d been fighting in Afghanistan with Team Twenty-Two the previous summer. She did all she possibly could to make up for that.

For today’s celebration, Fredrick had arranged that she spend time with more than a dozen Alphas. She began meeting with them early in the afternoon so she would be finished and able to spend more time with her own pack members. These meetings went well and she made arrangements with several Alphas for programs which would be of mutual benefit.

When she then made time for each member in her pack, that also went extremely well. They were getting to really know her and, more and more, they opened up to her about their lives, their problems, their hopes and their dreams. She asked each of them how she personally could make a difference in their life. If there was nothing immediate which they wanted, she made them promise to come to her if and when anything might arise in the future.

She invited Ayleen to visit again, which she did. Missy wanted to reinforce Ayleen’s commitment to reject WIJO and remain loyal to U.S. interests. She’d told her, “I’m making you an honorary pack member. You only need to promise never to betray our secrets.”

Abu Habib and the other WIJO spies had all been forced to leave. Ayleen had met with Abu and explained she was not returning home to Afghanistan but was instead making a new home with Nolan Miller. When Abu had argued with her, she had smiled and said, “The demons are making me do this. Missy McCrea sends her regards and will punish WIJO should anyone come after me or Nolan.”

Mark and Alice were made honorary pack members as well. They each now had several pack members working for them and that was going great. Like John, Mark had graduated and would work full time managing Missy’s millions. Only until September, of course, when he’d start school at Harvard. He hoped his new management company would then only need his supervision part time.

Alice and Amanda were starting yet another project together. They wanted to work with other packs to eliminate arranged marriages and find ways for young girls to migrate to different packs, packs of their choosing, in hopes of finding mates of their choosing. If they wanted that. There would be competitions and incentives and this program would need work, but they were excited about it. Females were not merely for breeding.

Missy would spend two more days at home before teleporting over to join Team Twenty-Two on Monday. She and Mike would spend that Saturday with Missy’s family. Heather was now eight months and complaining constantly about how huge she was. Missy had sensed both her baby girls were supernaturals but was keeping that information to herself. Although not Shifters, Heather’s twin daughters would definitely become witches once they matured.

Sunday, of course, was Aaron and Michelle’s wedding. Mike’s sister was beyond excited and very tired of all the bridezilla jokes. She couldn’t wait for her big day and Missy was excited for her. The happy couple would honeymoon in Hawaii.

Missy was also excited for Oliver and Candace. They wanted to get married that summer as well. Missy promised she’d take leave and teleport back whenever they scheduled that. Weddings were always such happy events.

Eventually, darkness dropped down and the moon rose up high in the sky. It was a clear night and before long, her pack members were Shifting into their wolf forms and anxious for her to join them. Missy kissed Mike and soon she too was once again leading her pack for their run through the deep woods. There was muc
h howling. And, occasionally, a joyous cougar scream could be heard as well.

  Chapter One

  Sunday, Jun 7, 2020

Mike stood there next to Aaron and checked his pocket yet again. Yep. The rings were still there, just as they’d been the last dozen times he’d checked. He was Aaron’s best man and was determined to do everything correctly. No … he wasn’t nervous. Much. He’d reviewed all the duties which were associated with his role and knew he was on top of everything. He’d even made a spreadsheet weeks earlier, which he’d been updating as he’d completed key tasks and had thought of additional ones. Aaron had been his closest friend for many years and he was not going to let him down now. The fact that Aaron was marrying his twin sister Michelle? Nope. Didn’t make him nervous.

Then the music for the bridal march started up and he watched as the flower girl, six years old and one of Aaron’s nieces, began walking down the aisle, strewing rose petals. She was followed by the ring bearer, seven years old and one of Aaron’s nephews. Seeing the pillow which the boy was proudly carrying, albeit with fake rings, made him check his pocket yet again. Yep. The real rings were still there.

There were three bridesmaids paired with three groomsmen and then came the maid of honor. Missy. His Missy. His Everything. As always, she took his breath away. Her beauty today was especially radiant in spite of her effort to not compete with the bride. She was again wearing a gown with a one-shoulder neckline and sleeve design. This covered up most of the scars on her shoulder and back while being distinctive from the gowns being worn by all the other women in the wedding party.

Missy’s eyes were sparkling, deep green filled with golden specks, and she was looking directly at him. She was smiling broadly, making the vertical creases in her cheeks especially noticeable, and Mike once again marveled at how dazzling her appearance was today. But, no. He was not going to be distracted. He needed to focus on performing his best man duties and so, to remind himself of that, he once again checked for the rings in his pocket. Their presence was very reassuring.

Finally, Michelle appeared, on the arm of their father. She really looked spectacular in her bridal gown and all eyes watched as they proceeded down the aisle. Once she was kissed and handed off to Aaron, the wedding ceremony began in earnest. It was a wonderful event and, at the appropriate moment when vows were being exchanged, Mike pulled out those wedding rings and presented them.

Whew! Another key task completed. Or, was that a ring task? No matter. He’d done it and, as the proceedings continued without a hitch, he began to relax. Not surprisingly, Missy began mindspeaking once again, telling him he could relax. She experienced all of his emotions when she wanted to and had been holding off sending him mental messages. Until now.

Mike looked over at her and grinned. She was especially happy and, as always, that affected him, making his heart burst with love. They had been enjoying their time together, creating more special memories. While he had not gone with her to Hong Kong and would not be going over to Afghanistan, he had at least been able to share some magical moments with her during this brief interval in her life when she’d been home.

He now lived for those Missy moments. He knew her calling in life only allowed those times with him to happen in between all those other times, times when the Fabulous Fates (as she and Tracy liked to call their supernatural guides) would demand that she step forward and deal with something else.

When there were people who needed to be rescued, people whom Missy was uniquely qualified to save? She would always accept full responsibility for doing that, regardless of the sacrifices which might be necessary. But, she had chosen him, bonded with him, claimed he was an important source of her power, and he was willing to support whatever she needed to do. They completed each other and he would never want things to be any other way.

The day passed quickly, of course. He managed to complete all his other key tasks, signing the marriage license as a witness along with Missy, being at Aaron’s side during the receiving line at the reception, gathering all the gift envelopes for the newly married couple, giving the special best man’s toast, and handling all the other items which he had meticulously planned for.

Dancing with the maid of honor was of course one of the highlights. He whispered into Missy’s ear, “I am really enjoying all this, family and friends and my sister’s special day, but I’m also looking forward to when we’ll be alone later tonight. Our last night together for a whole month. You will be back for the next full moon, right?”

Missy giggled and said, “Of course! My pack needs me, my sister needs me, those babies she’s carrying need me, and most of all … you need me. And, I need you, Mike. Don’t ever doubt how important you are to me.”

Mike knew Heather’s twins were due sometime in early July. But, to remind her of what he considered her top priority to be, he pulled her even closer and said, “I’m sort of counting on you showing me how important I am later tonight. Banish all my doubts, satiate all my needs, overwhelm me with your needs, keep me up all night …”

Missy chuckled and pressed herself up against him and whispered in her sexiest voice, “That’s a promise I can make. Since I’ll be teleporting tomorrow, I can restore and replenish all my energy after thoroughly enjoying a night of debauchery with you.”

Mike laughed and said, “Debauchery? Really? Now I’m really getting excited.”

“Well, you deserve a reward for being such a good friend to Aaron and good brother to Michelle. They’ve both given me an excellent report so it’s only right that I handle that for them since they’ll be away on their honeymoon. Besides … I have ways for rewarding you which they could never manage.” Missy giggled and rubbed her pelvis against his very obvious erection. She loved teasing him and getting him aroused was lots of fun. She would miss him terribly.

When the dance ended, Mike continued to hold her close (hiding the way his trousers were now tenting outward) as they made their way back to their table. To distract himself and hopefully regain a bit of control, he picked up a spoon and clinked it against his wine glass. Aaron and Michelle had also just returned from dancing and it was a good opportunity. Everyone around them quickly joined in, clinking their glasses to entice the newlyweds to kiss each other once again.

Missy enjoyed thinking about this tradition for making noise to scare away the demons so the bride and groom could safely kiss. Her government buddies had promoted the notion that she was a demon to the terrorist organization WIJO. They had learned about her having supernatural powers and abilities and, since it wasn’t part of their culture to believe in witches or werecats, that explanation had seemed more appropriate. She knew she would soon be reprising her role, reminding the WIJO leaders how the U.S. government would continue to punish them for any attempted attacks against them or their allies.

Yes, events over the last several months had led to supernaturals being part of the national defense strategy, with her role at the forefront of that. She looked at Mike and reflected on how much his love and support enabled her to take on that role. Yes, she indeed would show him how important he was, reward him for how wonderful he was and give him one more night of passionate lovemaking which he would never forget. Doing that, of course, was a role which she also would enjoy. Carpe diem!

Les and Marsha Gooding from “P” Branch had flown over to Kabul and had brought all of Missy’s clothing and equipment with them. They were again using the special offices and quarters at Camp Eggers which they had used several times before and which were now assigned to Team Twenty-Two.

That A-Team had formerly been located at nearby Camp Phoenix but, after being designated as the Army’s quick reaction force for dealing with supernatural elements, they had moved over to this special area. Their roster had been greatly expanded and their commander had been authorized the rank of major. That had enabled Major Grimes to remain in that position after his promotion.

  Colonel Ch
ory was also at Camp Eggers, commanding all the Special Forces units in the country. He and General Blake, the CENTCOM commander in charge of the Army’s forces in the Mid-East, were amongst the few who knew about supernaturals. The only others outside of those in “P” Branch and Robert Ulrey’s FBI Psychic Division were a few Congressman and government officials which included the president, of course. Everyone else only knew that Team Twenty-Two and its missions were highly classified.

Robert’s division had initially been established to employ various finder witches as psychics to assist local police forces around the U.S. They searched for missing people, typically kidnap victims, but they could also locate criminals. When WIJO terrorist cells had planned some attacks at various places in the U.S., Robert’s finder witches had helped locate them and, with Missy’s help, his team had helped deal with them. His team had then been expanded into a much larger task force with personnel from other government agencies and the military being assigned. The Secretary of Defense had subsequently asked Congress to approve those elements of this task force dealing with international threats to be designated as the Special Operations Division (SOD).

The general public would know about this SOD Group (which really would be a special Supernatural Operations Division) but they would not know any details about their highly classified missions or the supernatural members who were included. Missy with her witch and werewolf friends had proven to the government that their assistance was very helpful and greatly needed. Yes, events over the last several months had now led to having this group obtain its own identity. They would be separate from Robert’s FBI psychics (who focused on operations within the U.S.) and from “P” Branch, the government agency which monitored, but did not usually interact with, supernaturals around the world.
